No, I'm not listing them here - I don't recall them all, and I don't want to cheat anybody.

I've been asked if a "history" of the awards is available anywhere. I'm starting to think I'm dreaming it up, but has anybody ever seen such a thing? Might Elmer have written something for the Relevant Issue at some time?

If nobody's done it, it's probably a good idea, and there's got to be somebody out there who knows the history of all the folks we honor by naming an award after them.

All Past Awards are listed here:
http://polygraph.org/content/apa-awards

BTW Barry, I know there were a couple of board changes, how can I get a list of the new board members? Don't see anything on APA site just yet and would like to include that in a news piece for the Blog. Pic would be cool too if you know who has the new photos.

Send Robbie an email for the complete, up to date list of who's who. I can't spell some of the names, so I'm not going to try.

By history, I meant the story behind the award. For example, I received the Motsinger award, but I had no idea who he was or why the award was named after him. I had to ask around to learn it. It would be nice to know the history behind all of the awards.

If you're reading this Marty (new APA web guy), note that you can only find why an award is given in the bylaws - nothing on the award page Ralph linked to explains the reason an award is awarded.

I get it now...and I too seem to remember an article on the history of the awards...I'll go looking and include that as well in my APA update story.

The APA award definitions are listed in the APA rules. I believe APA also has the past award recipients listed as well,

No, no, no. I don't know how else to ask. Why, for example, is there a John Reid award? I don't mean the reason the award is given, but why Reid? Reid has a history of something - and those of us in law enforcement know that something - that makes the award in his name more meaningful. What about the others? Who are the Clinchards, for example?

In other words, what is the story behind the story? With any luck Ralph and I aren't crazy and he'll find something....

I seam to recall at an APA awards banquet about 3-4 years ago they played Skips smooth voice announcing the meaning behind the awards before the award was given. Hopefully he can provide you that information.

Barry - I don't think I ever wrote an article on the APA Awards other than reporting who was awarded what at the various seminars - if I did write one, I just don't remember (I think it has to do with advancing age and prior alcohol consumption).

The Cleve Backster Award is obvious as is the Leonarde Keeler Award (Keeler did so many things for our profession that it was hard to quantify, but we know Cleve has put most of his efforts over the years toward standardization as well as contributed many other things - but standardization has been the most memorable).

John Reid is also obvious because of the Reid Interviewing, but also his "Truth & Deception" books, and other interview/interrogation books, his research in developing CQs, test formats, etc,, nad his teaching in basic schools as well as other programs.

For those who don't know or who haven't figured it out - William Bennett was Robbie's spouse and as a practicing examiner worked untirelessly for APA and the PG profession until his death, and since Robbie was always at APA with him and also helped him with a large load of his APA work, she was the natural selection to be the National Office Manager when we got big enough to need one.

Al (aka "the Gretna Grouch") & Dorthea Clinchard were a similar team like Bill and Robbie and contributed much to the progress and success of APA, and he served as treasurer for a long time (with Dorthea being the unofficial Assistant Treasurer).(At least I think that is correct about Al & Dorthea and I am not confusing them with someone else).

Dave Motsinger had been one of the "rising stars" who started attending APA seminars and worked for many APA committees and became an officer in a very short period of time, but, unfortuatley, his never-ending work for APA was short-circuited by a quick and untimely death caused by cancer which is why the 10 year or less requirement is in the award. He saw a need very early in his career for helping our profession and helping APA, and went to work to do what needed to be done.

I hope this helps.

Excellent. You've got the makings of a nice little Magazine article there. (Hint, hint.)
